Funded by Act of Parliament in 1854 for the 'the Diffusion and Advancement of Science, Literatrure and Art amongst all Classes of Persons resident in Birmingham and the Midlands Counties,' the B.M.I. has been at the heart of Birmingham's educational and cultural life for more than 150 years.
